Starting off our safari, we will drive from Johannesburg and head straight for the Kruger National Park.
This is the largest national park in the country and is teeming with wildlife. Due to its relatively easy access and good road network, we aim to be game viewing by mid-afternoon as we drive through the park to our appointed camp.
Today, we spent the entire day exploring the national park in anticipation of seeing the animals that make this park world-famous. We are also changing camps today to be closer to the gate for our exit the following morning.
After our experience in the national park, today we traversed through central Limpopo, heading to Mapungubwe National Park, a hidden gem in South African tourism. The name “Mapungubwe” is derived from either TjiKalanga or Tshivenda and may mean “Hill of Jackals” or “Stone Monuments”. The kingdom represented the first stage in a development that would culminate in the creation of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe in the 13th century. This is well presented at the Great Zimbabwe Monument in Masvingo, Zimbabwe.
“To do justice to the entire history of how interlinked the area is, on this tour, we visit the Great Zimbabwe monument to complement and thoroughly understand the area’s history. The Great Zimbabwe is a medieval city in the southeastern hills of modern Zimbabwe, near Lake Mutirikwe and the town of Masvingo. It is believed to have been the capital of a great kingdom during the late Iron Age. Construction on the city began in the 9th century and continued until it was abandoned in the 15th century. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the largest dry-stone wall ever constructed. We aim to visit the monument in the late afternoon.”
From learning about the foundation of the country of Zimbabwe, we are now heading to Matopos National Park to look for the elusive rhinoceros. Here, we aim to find rhinos on a walking safari to learn from the local guides of the area.
Traveling from Matopos, we are heading northwest to visit the largest national park in Zimbabwe, Hwange National Park. Hwange is a haven for over 100 species of mammals and an impressive 400-plus bird species, making it a must-visit if you are in this part of the world. We will be enjoying an afternoon and a nighttime game drive before returning to camp.
After our wildlife experiences, we say goodbye to the African Savanah and now head to Victoria Falls as the tour draws to a conclusion. Tour ends after dinner.
